St. Andrew's Episcopal Church
Greensboro, North Carolina
Centennial Celebration
1891-1991
This history like many other things associated with St. Andrew's Episcopal Church is a tribute by and to the people of St. Andrew's. While the first fifty years have passed with little insight into the people and events, the second fifty are remembered well by a large number of active members. The church seems blessed with people who remember the "good old days." While all churches experience a change in people, it has always been slow at St. Andrew's.
The last fifty or so years are vivid in the memories of the people who remembered and reviewed this book. Their stories and anecdotes contribute to those who come behind them. There are a number of old pictures that have survived the ravages of time. Some are included; others will be displayed at the church throughout this CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION.
Special thanks go to the living historians of St. Andrew's including:
- Bob Clark
- Henry Gabriel
- Dottie Clark
- Willis Durham
- J. Preston Hodgin
- Harold Moag
In reading the commentary on the founding in 1891 it needs to be remembered that a "Sunday School" and "Church School" were used interchangeably and both apparently referred to an educational day school, not a Sunday religious education class as we know it today.
My thanks to Bob Clark who did much of the courthouse research and who found my literary errors; and to the Centennial Celebration committee of Ann Moag, Anne Stowe and Bonnie Yarina. Also to Rev. G. William Poulos, Rector, who appointed me chairman of the CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION.
